No reciprocity, endorsement is the Commission's call

Indiana has no reciprocity with any state. The only door in is a case-by-case Endorsement application, reviewed for equivalence by a Commission member and then voted on by the full Real Estate Commission. Approval waives the 90-hour course and the entire national exam, leaving one 50-question Indiana state-law exam at $55. Indiana abolished the salesperson license in 2014, so arriving salespersons and brokers both land as an Indiana broker, and timing is the trap because the Commission met only 9 times in 2026 and nothing moves until it votes.

What carries over to Indiana, and what does not

Comes with you

  • Your active out-of-state license, the whole basis of the claim
  • National exam portion, waived once the Commission approves
  • The 90-hour pre-licensing course, waived the same way
  • No fingerprints, no background check, no E&O to buy

New for this state

  • The $60 broker application filed in MyLicense One
  • Verification sent direct from every state that licensed you
  • 50-question Indiana state-law exam, 90 minutes, scaled 75
  • 30 hours of post-licensing education, then 12 CE hours a year

If you hold a broker license

Nothing changes at the door. An arriving broker files the same $60 application and sits the same state-law exam for the same Indiana broker license. Managing broker is a separate later application that since July 1, 2025 needs 3 years of active broker licensure (up from 2), a 24-hour course, and a new written exam, plus Indiana residency unless every licensee at the firm is a nonresident.

Working in Indiana without a Indiana license

On a single deal Commercial yes, residential no. IC 25-34.1-3-11 lets an out-of-state commercial broker work an Indiana commercial deal unlicensed, if you cooperate in writing with an Indiana broker, file an irrevocable consent to service of process, name that broker in all ads, and run every dollar and document through them. Residential offers only written permission the Commission may grant in its sole discretion under IC 25-34.1-3-2(b)(12), unadvertised.
Referrals Yes, it is in the statute. IC 25-34.1-3-2(b)(7) exempts referral of real estate business between a broker licensed in another state and an Indiana broker, both directions. The Indiana firm needs a written agreement with the client and a written fee agreement with the cooperating broker, and any split reaches you through your own broker.

Watch out in Indiana

  • The Commission met only 9 times in 2026, so a file landing just after a meeting waits 6 to 8 weeks for the next one, and nothing moves until that vote.
  • One year from filing is the hard limit covering the vote, the exam, and every stray document. Miss it and the application is abandoned with no board action, and you refile as a new applicant.
  • Managing broker got harder on July 1, 2025. The prerequisite went from 2 years to 3 years of active broker licensure and a new written exam was added. Whether out-of-state years count toward it is confirming.
