Transfer a Veterinary License to California
Full application, now surprisingly light
California has no shortcut, but the dreaded state clinical exam was abolished in 2022, leaving a straightforward if pricey application: $350 to apply, $500 for the license, and a 32-question open-book online law quiz. The traps are timing: the quiz must be finished within 40 days of applying, and a national exam older than 5 years needs curing with proof of 2 years and 2,500 hours of recent practice.
What carries over to California, and what does not
Comes with you
- Your NAVLE via AAVSB (within 5 years, or cured by recent-practice proof)
- Your degree (direct from school or AAVSB)
- 2 years + 2,500 hours of recent practice (cures an older exam)
New for this state
- California Law Exam: 32 questions, open book, within 40 days
- DOJ + FBI fingerprints (hard cards by mail)
- Verifications from every jurisdiction ever licensed
- Passport-style photo

Watch out in California
- The 40-day law-quiz window is a hard fail: miss it and you reapply. Start the quiz only after submitting the application.
- National exam older than 5 years? Line up your 2-year/2,500-hour practice proof before applying.
- Hard-card fingerprints take 45 to 60 days to process; request the packet early.
- Fee caps jumped in January 2026 and board fees have sat at the old caps since 2020, so increases are likely.
After you are licensed
- Renew every 2 years ($500 plus a $30 controlled-substance database fee). CE is 36 hours with a 6-hour self-study cap; RACE counts.
- Running a practice means a premises registration with a managing licensee; telehealth-only locations are exempt.
- A license lapsed over 5 years is cancelled outright; under 5 years it's renewable with fees.
