Michigan has the lightest document load in the country for experienced vets: licensed 5 or more years in a US state means no transcripts, no exam paperwork, nothing but the application, fingerprints, and verifications. $244.40 buys a full 3-year license. Under 5 years licensed, you add transcripts and a score transfer. Two conditions matter: you must be actively practicing, and continuing education later includes required live hours.

Working in Michigan without a Michigan license

To advise another vet Free in 'exceptional circumstances' when a Michigan health professional calls you in, and the exemption covers consultation AND treatment, so hands-on help is allowed. It must stay exceptional, not routine.

For visits or one-time work No temporary permit exists, but two quirks help: the exceptional-circumstances exemption covers one-off hands-on cases, and vets living near the Michigan border who are licensed in the adjoining state may extend their practice into Michigan without a Michigan office.

For remote care Michigan license required. The vet-client relationship needs a recent in-person exam (or herd premises visits) outside emergencies. Once established, telehealth care and prescribing within scope are allowed.

Watch out in Michigan

'Actively practicing' is a hard condition: an inactive-but-valid license elsewhere may not qualify.
CE includes at least 12 live hours per 3-year cycle, 6 of them physically in person. All-online CE won't cut it.
The optional controlled-substance license ($259.10) must be issued BEFORE Michigan will anchor your DEA registration.
Renewal runs from your issue date, not a calendar date.

After you are licensed

Renew $218.40 every 3 years. CE is 45 hours including an hour of law and an hour on medical records.
A border exemption lets vets in adjoining states extend their practice into Michigan without a Michigan office.
Military members, veterans, and their dependents get the initial fees waived entirely.
