Florida just got dramatically easier: a law effective July 1, 2026 removed the old three-year requirement, so any active license in good standing plus a passed national exam qualifies. Never been disciplined anywhere? Then there's no exam at all, just a 2-hour online course on Florida's laws. The fee stings, but there are no fingerprints and the process is fast.

Working in Florida without a Florida license

To advise another vet Narrow: only board-certified specialists get Florida's consulting exemption, on a specific case at a Florida vet's request. Everyone else should keep it informal and vet-to-vet.

For visits or one-time work Weak options. The $200 temporary license lasts 30 days but covers only ONE owner's animals outside declared emergencies, so it fails for clinic shifts. Unpaid spay/neuter and preventive care under a Florida vet's supervision needs no license. Anything else: the full endorsement, which at least is fast.

For remote care Full Florida license required. Once licensed, you can establish the vet-client relationship by real-time video, with 14-day prescription limits and no controlled substances without an in-person exam.

Watch out in Florida

Most of the internet still describes the old 3-year rule; it died July 1, 2026. Trust the official application, which carries the update banner.
The 30-day temporary license covers a single owner's animals only, a trap for relief vets.
Opening your own location means a premises permit ($250 plus a $60 inspection every 2 years).
Veterans and their spouses within 60 months of discharge get initial fees waived.

After you are licensed

Renew every 2 years by May 31 of even years ($265). CE is 30 hours including 1 hour on dispensing and 2 on Florida law; all 30 can be online.
Telehealth needs the Florida license; the vet-client relationship can be established by live video, with 14-day prescribing limits.
New rule since July 2026: clients must be told of their right to a written prescription.
