Since a 2023 law, Ohio's statute says the board “shall issue” a license to a vet licensed anywhere in the US. That's the strongest promise any state here makes. The friction is procedural: state and FBI fingerprints, certifications from every state you've ever held, and a hard 6-month deadline.

Working in Ohio without a Ohio license

To advise another vet Free. Ohio's consulting exemption covers advice, with the Ohio vet keeping responsibility for the patient.
For visits or one-time work Ohio sells a $100 temporary permit for consulting or specific animals, good for 6 months. The catches: an Ohio-licensed vet must sponsor you, you still do both background checks, and it's twice per lifetime.
For remote care Ohio license required. After that, telehealth for companion animals is legal, including a remote vet-client relationship.

Watch out in Ohio

  • The 6-month clock is unforgiving. An incomplete file means starting over, fee lost.
  • The fee depends on the calendar year: $425 in even years, $300 in odd.
  • The temporary permit ($100) needs an Ohio-licensed sponsor and is capped at two per lifetime.

After you are licensed

  • Renew by March 1 of even years, $155 on time.
  • 30 CE hours per 2 years, online capped at 18.
  • Telehealth needs the Ohio license. Remote VCPR is allowed for companion animals, with 14-day prescription limits.
