Five clean years skip a fresh NAVLE, and the exam is emailed

Nevada says it has no reciprocity, then quietly offers two no-fresh-NAVLE lanes for vets with 5 continuous, discipline-free years: a standard-application waiver, and a 2024 endorsement rule with a 60-day statutory clock (that one adds fingerprints and a zero-tolerance screen). The famous 90 percent law exam is EMAILED to you, and the license mails 3 to 5 business days after you pass. Time it right and it's half price: $250 instead of $500 through June 30, 2027.

Working in Nevada without a Nevada license

To advise another vet Careful: Nevada's consulting exemption is diplomate-only (an AVMA specialist called in by a Nevada vet, 30 days per 12 months). An ordinary out-of-state vet has NO consulting carve-out here.
For visits or one-time work The temporary license is stingy: 10 consecutive days, one named location, twice a calendar year, $150, requested 30-plus days ahead. It's free if the work is unpaid (charity events). A 1960 statute also lets vets in adjoining states serve underserved Nevada border areas license-free until a local objects.
For remote care Full Nevada license required. The relationship must start hands-on or with a premises visit; after that, telemedicine can maintain it. General, non-specific advice is fine without one.

Watch out in Nevada

  • The 5-year waiver wants CONTINUOUS licensure and practice with zero discipline ever; a career gap or one old reprimand re-triggers the 5-year exam-recency rule.
  • PAVE lockout: foreign grads need ECFVG. Nevada flatly rejects PAVE, one of the few states where the distinction is decisive.
  • The lapse cliff is the worst we've catalogued anywhere: licenses expire June 30 of odd years, and forfeiture after August 31 means reinstatement requires a NAVLE passed within the past 5 years. For most vets that's a full national-exam retake.
  • The board's own fee schedule PDF describes the half-price window backwards; the regulation and the application say even-to-odd years. Trust the rule.

After you are licensed

  • Renewal paperwork is due May 15 of odd years, money by June 30, then $50 a month until the August 31 forfeiture. Calendar all three dates forever.
  • CE is 40 hours per 2 years with distance learning capped at 20; random audits want proof of 20 hours from the last 12 months.
  • Opening a practice needs a facility permit (non-vet ownership is legal at a pricier tier); relief vets at an already-permitted clinic need nothing extra, and each drug-handling facility needs one vet registered with both the DEA and the state pharmacy board.
