Working in Nebraska without a Nebraska license

Watch out in Nebraska

  • The reciprocity certification must come from your INITIAL licensing state, not your current one; career-long movers should start that request first.
  • Write 'Controlled Substance' as the fingerprint reason, and out-of-state prints must be INK CARDS (Nebraska refuses out-of-state digital prints).
  • Incomplete files are closed and DESTROYED at 90 days; even granted-license files are destroyed after 5 years, so keep copies.
  • Fee waivers are unusually broad: under-26 applicants, low-income households, and military families all skip the initial fee.

After you are licensed

  • Everyone expires April 1 of even years ($168). CE is 32 hours per cycle; specialty board certification satisfies the entire requirement.
  • Prescribers owe 3 opioid CE hours including a half hour on the monitoring program (through 2028).
  • The 90-day locum license (equal-standards states) skips the background check entirely; ask the Licensure Unit for the form.
