New 2026 law: they must issue within 30 days

Indiana tore down its reciprocity wall on July 1, 2026: the old 5-years-of-practice requirement is gone, and the new law says the board SHALL issue your license within 30 days once your file verifies, one of the only hard deadlines in the country. You'll take an Indiana law exam and do fingerprints, and your record must be spotless: any discipline anywhere is disqualifying on the sworn affidavit.

Working in Indiana without a Indiana license

To advise another vet Free: an out-of-state licensed and resident vet may consult with an Indiana vet, but Indiana defines consultation as the Indiana vet RECEIVING ADVICE. No hands-on work, no clients of your own.

For visits or one-time work Nothing short of the full license: no temporary, courtesy, or locum permits. The consolation: the full license is cheap to keep ($100 every 2 years) and the new law forces issuance within 30 days of a verified file.

For remote care Indiana license required; forming a relationship with or prescribing for an Indiana-located patient from outside the state legally counts as practicing in Indiana. The vet-client relationship requires having recently seen the animal in person, opioids can't be prescribed by telehealth, and the controlled-substance registration needs an Indiana street address.

Watch out in Indiana

Don't fingerprint early: prints taken before the board emails your official processing date are void.
The affidavit is unforgiving: any discipline, surrender, or pending complaint anywhere disqualifies the fast route.
Pre-2026 guides call Indiana a hard reciprocity state; that's obsolete as of July 1, 2026.
The controlled-substance registration requires an Indiana street address, so remote-only vets can't prescribe controlled drugs.

After you are licensed

Renew just $100 every 2 years (October 15 of odd years), tied with Illinois for the cheapest in the country. CE is 40 hours with no format caps, and your other state's CE double-counts.
A signed passport photo ('I certify that this is a true photograph of me') is a charming paperwork relic.
Consulting is advice-only; Purdue faculty are exempt from licensure entirely.
