Iowa is the cheapest state in the country: $110 all-in, then $60 every THREE years, about $20 a year. No law exam, no fingerprints. Two no-exam routes: endorsement (graduated 5-plus years ago with 2,000 practice hours in the last 5) or the universal-recognition verification path. The catches are pure Iowa: 60 CE hours from the last 3 years is required just to APPLY, everything runs on paper and mailed checks, and the endorsement form demands a never-disciplined record.

Working in Iowa without a Iowa license

To advise another vet Free: an out-of-state vet may consult with an Iowa-licensed vet. Framed as vet-to-vet; anything more is practice.
For visits or one-time work Iowa's 180-day temporary permit is a real locum tool: FULL practice authority, $50, one per calendar year, three per lifetime, for vets not seeking an Iowa license. You'll still need the 60-hour CE portfolio and verifications.
For remote care Iowa license or permit required. The relationship cannot be established 'solely based on a telephonic or electronic communication' (COVID-era leniency ended October 2022), and prescribing without one is expressly not permissible.

Watch out in Iowa

  • The 60-hour CE portfolio (last 3 years) is an APPLICATION requirement; vets from no-CE states must bank hours before applying.
  • The endorsement gate counts 5 years from GRADUATION, stranding recently minted vets; the verification path is the workaround.
  • All paper, one check, no online payments, no portal.
  • The verification form still assumes you're moving to Iowa even though the law no longer requires it; non-residents should confirm with the board first.

After you are licensed

  • Everyone expires together June 30, 2029 ($60). CE is 60 hours per 3 years with up to 20 carrying forward; online CE must be RACE-approved.
  • The 180-day temporary permit (one per year, three per lifetime) is a genuine full-authority locum tool.
