Working in Virginia without a Virginia license

To advise another vet Free. Virginia's consulting exemption covers you when a Virginia vet calls you in, as long as you stick to advising and don't open an office there.

For visits or one-time work There's no paid shortcut. Virginia has no temporary permit, so paid hands-on work means the full $200 endorsement. Free charity care is the exception: a $10 volunteer registration, or up to 3 days at a qualifying nonprofit with no registration at all.

For remote care You need the full Virginia license for telehealth. The silver lining: once licensed, Virginia even lets you start the vet-client relationship by video.

Watch out in Virginia

A license issued before July 1 expires December 31 of the same year, so the first renewal comes fast.
Endorsement is technically at the board's discretion. It isn't automatic.
Horses are excluded from Virginia's remote VCPR rule.

After you are licensed

15 CE hours per year. RACE and AVMA courses count.
Telehealth requires the Virginia license, but once you have it you can establish the vet-client relationship electronically for companion animals.
Free clinic work is easy: a $10 volunteer registration, or up to 3 days without registering.
