They must issue: one letter, no exam, $150

Utah's endorsement statute says the division SHALL issue the license: similar-scope license, one year of practice under it, good standing, done. Every US state counts as equivalent on Utah's own list. No law exam, no fingerprints, no notarization, and the entire documentary burden beyond the application is ONE verification letter from your origin board. $150 in, $83 every two years. The only thing that turns 'shall' into 'maybe' is disciplinary history.

First year: about $265 (with the drug license)Renewal: $83 / 2 yrsWait: not published; license emailed 1-3 days after approvalWork while waiting: 90-day association allowanceTravel required: None

What carries over to Utah, and what does not

Comes with you

  • Your license itself: similar scope + 1 year of practice + good standing means they MUST issue
  • Your NAVLE, any vintage (endorsement doesn't even re-check it)
  • No exam, no fingerprints, no notarization

New for this state

  • ONE license verification, sent by your origin board
  • The $100 Utah Controlled Substance license (self-affidavit) if you'll handle drugs
  • Explanations only if a screening question is a 'yes'

Working in Utah without a Utah license

To advise another vet Free: the consultation exemption covers an out-of-state licensee called in by a Utah vet, with no stated time cap. Invited lectures and demonstrations are exempt too.
For visits or one-time work The best relief bridge in this wave: up to 90 days working in association with Utah-licensed vets, no permit, no fee. The rule narrows it to work at a Utah vet's request on specific clients, so anything open-ended means the full license, which is only $150 anyway.
For remote care Utah license required, and the relationship may not be established solely by electronic means. A sweeping 2026 telemedicine bill was stripped before passage; expect it back in 2027.

Watch out in Utah

  • Both official documents lag the law: the endorsement guide is dated 2020, and the application still says '6 months' of experience even though a 2026 law changed it to 1,000 hours in May. Follow the statute, not the PDF.
  • Any disciplinary history, prior or pending, converts 'shall issue' into a discretionary review.
  • Controlled substances need a separate $100 Utah license (a self-affidavit, no exam) on top of your DEA registration.
  • Small but real: Utah can revoke a license just for not being displayed at your principal place of business.

After you are licensed

  • Everyone renews September 30 of EVEN years ($83, plus $78 for the drug license); licensed in the cycle's final 12 months, you skip the first renewal entirely.
  • CE is 24 hours per 2 years including 1 opioid-recognition hour and 1 workplace-communication hour; RACE covers the rest without limits.
  • No facility permits and no premises inspections. If you ever lapse past 2 years while continuously licensed elsewhere, a 6-month window after moving to Utah reinstates you without examination.
