Kansas repealed endorsement back in 1999, so a 30-year veteran files the same application as a new graduate, rescued only by an accommodation: 3,000 practice hours in the last 3 years substitutes for a fresh national exam. The law exam demands 90 percent and is normally taken in person, by appointment, at the board office in Wamego, population 4,700, making Kansas the first state on this site to require actual travel. It's cheap at least: $125 in, $100 a year.

Working in Kansas without a Kansas license

Watch out in Kansas

  • The 3,000-hour trap: graduated over 5 years ago, working under about 19 hours a week, with a NAVLE older than 5 years? You fail both prongs and must retake the national exam.
  • The lapse cliff is the harshest anywhere: 60 days past June 30 there is NO reinstatement, only a complete new application including the exam again.
  • Two character references (one vet, one 'reputable business or professional person'), a notarized summary, and a description of your 'distinguishing scars or marks.'
  • The sleeper: a separate expedited statute gives anyone who INTENDS to move to Kansas a 45-day action clock and a probationary license.

After you are licensed

  • Renew $100 every June 30. CE is 20 hours a year with no mandatory topics and no format caps, the loosest CE rules in the country.
  • Opening a practice (including mobile) means premises registration with inspections; relief vets at registered clinics need nothing extra.
  • Military spouses are exempt from ALL fees, with a 15-day decision clock.
