Transfer a Veterinary License to Wisconsin

Verified July 2026 · 30 official sources

Spotless record = endorsement; any blemish = board review

Wisconsin's fast lane is for the spotless: currently licensed, never disciplined anywhere, ever, DEA privileges never touched, and either a recent exam or 4,000 practice hours in the last 5 years. Qualify and there's no score transfer at all, just a $185 application and the online open-book state-law exam, which needs a steep 88 percent. Any blemish drops you to board review with a longer, less predictable path.

Working in Wisconsin without a Wisconsin license

To advise another vet Wisconsin is stricter than most: being brought in on a case generally means the $160 consulting permit, requested in writing by a Wisconsin vet, capped at 60 days per calendar year, advice-only, with the VCPR staying with the attending vet.
For visits or one-time work The consulting permit is the only visiting tool, and it's advice-only: no treating the patient yourself, no client contact without the attending vet's knowledge. Hands-on work means the full license. There are no volunteer, emergency, or locum permits at all.
For remote care Wisconsin license required for telemedicine, and the vet-client relationship cannot be established by telehealth. Without one: general advice, emergency tele-triage, or advice-only consulting to a Wisconsin vet.

Watch out in Wisconsin

  • The clean-record gate is absolute: a decades-old reprimand or a single old exam failure without a later pass moves you to board review.
  • The state-law exam's 88 percent bar is among the highest here, though it's open book.
  • Two different PO boxes in two cities: applications go to Milwaukee, third-party documents to Madison. Mixing them up delays you.
  • Even online applicants must mail an original notarized signature page.

After you are licensed

  • Renew $160 every 2 years by mid-December of odd years. CE is 30 hours with no online caps; RACE counts.
  • The $160 consulting permit allows 60 days a year of advice-only work when a Wisconsin vet requests it in writing.
  • Telehealth needs the Wisconsin license, and the vet-client relationship can't start remotely.
